WD-40 goes on the exhaust's expasion chamber on my Yamaha YZ250 as soon as it's washed and dried. Nothing works better for displacing water and keeping any rust spots from forming. I even spray WD-40 inside the drain holes in the frame, so I know there's no rust forming inside the frame where you'de never see it until it's too late. Every steel spring on the outside of this machine gets a blast of WD-40 to get any dust or dirt off and keep them looking new.
